First response to Dan Meyer—Never disrespect your students.

About that Tedx video from Dan Meyer.

I will agree with part of what Dan says next entry, but I’ll start with what really p—ed me off.

At 3:00, he says “I’m very concerned…I’m going to retire in a world that my students will run.” He gets his cheap laugh, then dodges what he just says by implying that is only a concern if he teaches some stereotypically bad way. Apparently, if he does it right, only  the other teacher’s students will be worrisome.

I know. I know. It’s just a throwaway line, a cheap laugh. But that’s no excuse.

As a professional teacher, those student are your responsibility. It is your job to teach them, and the best way to do that is to respect them.

My students are as capable as students of any other generation. They care about the world they live in, and they will find ways to grow into their responsibilities. And I will protect them with everything I’ve got.

Any teacher that dares disrespect his/her students in public will get a blast from me. They deserve better, and you owe them better.
